What causes loud snoring?
Snoring is a sleep disorder and it is caused when the airway in which you breath through becomes narrowed and constricted. There are several reasons why this may happen, examples of which are: –
- Poor Sleeping Posture.
- Abnormalities in the soft tissue of your throat.
- You are overweight.
The above can cause your breathing to be more turbulent and as a result, a snoring sound is generated.
Someone who has too much nasal tissue or a throat issue is more likely to suffer from a snoring problem. Also your tongue may curve back causing a partial blockage of the throat, which again can cause you to snore.
What else can cause loud snoring?
There are a number of reasons why people can snore. Below we take a look at the most common causes.
Age and Sex
As you age the muscles in your throat decrease in strength which can cause the airway to become obstructed. This obstruction can lead to snoring.
Your snoring could come down to simple genetics. Factors could include enlarged adenoids, a narrow throat or cleft palate or tissue fat. As these factors are hereditary there isn’t anything you can do about them.
Being overweight can cause you to snore due to the excess fat around the neck putting extra pressure on the throat muscles.
There are certain sleeping positions that can make you more likely to snore than others. For example you are more likely to snore when lay on your back, this is because of the possibility of your tongue rolling back partially obstructing the airway.
Smoking can lead to snoring as it irritates the throat. Alcohol relaxes the muscles which can also lead to snoring. Some medications can also cause you to snore, an example would be sleeping pills.
If you suffer from Asthma, currently have a cold, have allergies or a sinus infection these can lead to blockages which in turn could cause you to snore.

Reduce your Weight
If your snoring is due to you being overweight a few lifestyle changes could well the be the solution for your snoring problems.
Avoid Certain Foods
Foods that are high in fat such as full fat milk or cheese could lead to a mucus build up and thus cause a blockage in your throat. Avoiding these foods several hours before sleep would be a good start.
The same applies to smoking, you should either consider giving up or have your last cigarette a few hours before you go to sleep. As for medications you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think your medication is causing you to snore.
Don’t overdo the alcohol and if you do drink, have your last drink a good few hours before bedtime if you want to reduce the chances of you snoring.
Elevate your Head
Elevating your head may prevent your tongue from falling backwards and your jaw slacking, avoiding causing a partial blockage of your airways.
Clear your Nasal Passages
If your nasal passages are blocked then the chances are you will be snoring when you go to sleep. Nasal decongestants or strips may help you clear the blockage and should reduce or even completely stop your snoring problem.
